Balance & Fall Prevention

Moving for Better Balance and Joint Health Program

As part of our mission, the Y seeks to support every older adult with their desire to stay active and healthy in spirit, mind and body.

Because falls are the leading cause of injuries among older adults, the Y offers a fall prevention program for seniors: Moving for Better Balance. Classes are offered at a variety of locations in our region, including YMCA facilities, senior centers, and other community locations in El Paso & Teller Counties.

Moving for Better Balance

 
Moving for Better Balance is a 12-week fall prevention program using the principles and movements of Tai Chi, designed to help adults 60 years and older improve their balance and increase their confidence in doing everyday activities. The entire class can be done in a chair.

Joint Health Program

The Joint Health Program at the Y is an evidence-based, small group fitness, nutrition and behavioral health intervention designed to facilitate pain relief from achy joints, and serve as a pre-qualifier for surgery. We will help identify small lifestyle changes that each participant can achieve as they progress towards their weight loss and physical activity goals that will facilitate success for pre-op, post-op and lifelong habits. Our goal is to provide positive guidance for healthy living at the right level of pain-free activity for each individual participant.
