8 Tips to Maximize Your YMCA Outdoor Pool Experience

Outdoor Pools open Saturday, May 25 (weather permitting) and we want to make sure you’re ready for some poolside fun. Check out these 8 tips for a great time at the best place to spend your summer in Colorado Springs! 

1. Learn to Swim

The Y has been named “America’s Swim Instructor” because we are the most accessible community resource in drowning prevention. Y’s across America teach over 1 million people to swim each year! If you aren’t swimming regularly, it can affect your abilities. Find your local Y, sign up for swim lessons and show off your skills at the outdoor pools!

2. Swim Your Laps in the Sun

Wilson RanchPortal and Monument Valley Pools have lap lanes set up and at least one designated lane for lap swimming usage. Take advantage of the outdoor pools for lap swimming and enjoy the change in scenery. The opening or closing hours will be your best shot at getting your laps in uninterrupted.  

3. Be Water Wise 

When swimming, don’t push yourself too hard. Be aware of the depth of the pool and know your swim ability. Make sure you’re not too tired to float, call for help or swim to the sides. Take breaks and don’t overdo it. 

4. Parents: Phone Down Eyes Up! 

Research has shown that 88% of children who drown are under some form of adult supervision.* Children are curious and drawn to the water. Don’t use the pool as a babysitter. Remember children ages six and under must be accompanied by an adult; and children ages 7 – 10 must have a parent/caregiver in the facility.

5. Know Your Band Colors

The YMCA Lifeguards are certified and have learned the skills needed to help prevent risks, but you can help! Everyone between the ages of 7 and 12 will take a swim test and receive a band.  Knowing your child's band colors help the lifeguards keep your little ones in their appropriate swimming zones and safe from harm.  

6. Bring The Essentials 

You’re not going to have a good time if you aren’t protected by your sunscreen. You should apply sunscreen with 30 SPF, or higher, 15 to 30 minutes before you get into the water and reapply approximately every two hours. Make sure you have your favorite swim gear and a towel handy also. 

7. Bring Your Snacks 

Bring a cooler with your favorite snacks and don’t forget your water! Be sure to leave your alcoholic beverages and glass bottles at home. The Y Aquatics Staff is trained to make sure that your safety comes first so we may check to make sure your items are allowed in the pool area. 

8. Bring Your Friends 

One of the best things about our outdoor pools are the communities they come with. Pikes Peaks YMCA outdoor pools are a great place to spend time with your family and friends while meeting some new people and building relationships with your neighbors in the Southern Colorado Springs Community.
